This veteran actress awarded the Padma Shri from Bengali film industry won the hearts of millions with her films Sanyasi Raja, Sabyasachi, Dui Purush, Sister, Bagh Bondi Khela, Chowringhee, Bon Polashir Padabali, Jadi jantem etc. She was born in Burma on 8 th Jan, 1935, her father was Gopal Chandra Banerjee, the then Lawyer. She made her acting debut at the age of seven and received an award from the president of Burma for her dancing skills. They had to take shelter as the Japanese attacked Burma in 1948 they came to Kolkata and settled permanently. Her debut film was Basu Paribar .
